Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
