Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
